Research Assistant (Policy and Engagement)— Energy and Sustainability

Brookings India is looking for a Research Assistant (RA) who can support ongoing efforts in the Energy and Sustainability vertical in one or more the following domains:

  1. DISCOMs (primary focus)
  2. Renewable Energy
  3. Electric Vehicles
  4. Electricity and Energy Planning (Demand and Supply)

RA positions are entry-level positions at Brookings India, typically for researchers with a Masters degree and/or 1-3 years of experience.  RAs work with Research Associates and Fellows in a combination of independent research as well as in a collaborative environment.

Key Functions

The primary (and immediate) function of the RA will be to support scholars with research and engagement with different electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) to understand the operating challenges and shortfalls, and assessing a long-term transition strategy for DISCOMs in India.

The RA is expected to have a basic understanding of the power sector— actors, stakeholders, issues, plans and policies. Knowledge of contemporary issues in power and associated sectors will be advantageous. This position requires local and periodic outstation travel to different DISCOMS to engage with experts and support the project with ground-level understanding of policy and implementation in different contexts. While advanced technical knowledge is not necessary, the RA will be expected to develop a good conceptual understanding of methodologies and models used for the analysis. While DISCOMs will be the primary focus, familiarity with related domains as mentioned above will also be required for the job.

The RA will also be expected to present their findings in high-level fora both within and outside Brookings India, and solicit and act on feedback received. The RA will also support scholars and the organisation in administrative and research capacity in organising workshops, conferences and other engagements.
